JUNO AWARDS 2016

SCOTT HELMAND LIVE PERFORMANCE

In the spring of 2016 I was contacted by Inframe Designs, a Toronto, Canada – based creative team known and respected for creating high end lighting, projection and set design for a number of important Canadian events such as the Juno Awards, We Day, Canadian Country Music Awards, Battle of the Blades, Chopped Canada, etc. In this case, they wanted me to create the background projections for the Scott Helman performance in the Juno Awards 2016.

The art direction wanted to create something that resembled the image displayed bellow; wooden planks with a bluish light shining underneath. The real challenge was to adjust the animation speed because as they were going to be played on 60ft long screens, so in order to appreciate the animation on these big screens, the exact instruction that I received was that it had to be “painfully slow”.

The other challenge that I faced here was that I was provided with an After Effects project that had a composition pre-set, which was set in a way that perfectly matched the mapping distribution of all the screens, fortunately, everything was clearly explained and after a few hours I felt completely comfortable moving graphics around to animate the piece.

The composition consisted of a top layer that had the wooden planks with a small separation that allowed the light to pass through. The separation was created with an alpha channel that also provided the location of where the light was going to shine. Then by using some masks, I revealed only the parts that I wanted the light to be on, the rest was simply black or off. Combining a lot of these masks moving in different directions and speeds I was able to create this really cool effect.
